Ethnic spatial dispersion and immigrant identity*

The role of ethnic clustering in identity formation has remained unexplored, mainly due to missing detailed data. This study closes the knowledge gap for Germany by employing a unique combination datasets, survey data from German Socio-Economic Panel and disaggregated information at low geographical levels last two but still unexploited full censuses, 1970 1987. Utilizing exogenous placement immigrants during recruitment era 1960s 1970s we find that local co-ethnic concentration affects immigrants’ identity. While residential strengthens retention an affiliation with their origin (minority identity), it weakens identification host society (majority identity). effects are nonlinear become significant only relatively high minority very majority findings robust instrumental variable approach.
